About Smokey Treats 2019-04-11T09:22:46+00:00

Company Introduction

Yes, cigarettes are bad. But, we’ve developed the solution to the world’s biggest litter problem.

We founded Smokey Treats in late 2015 with the vision to provide smokers with a less-damaging alternative to what is currently available on the global market. In doing so, we aim to challenge the deeply irresponsible, and immoral, practices of the corporate giants that dominate the industry – and whose products continue to destroy our natural environment.

We give a damn, and that’s the difference.

In a nutshell, we believe that smoking should be for your pleasure & the planet. Cigarette filters should not be made from plastic, tobacco should not be ruined with hundreds of artificial additives, and cigarette paper should not be bleached more than your toilette. They’re killing our environment, and besides… they just taste KAK!

So we spent 2 and a half years searching the globe (ok, mostly the internet) for the finest materials to bring you the world’s ultimate, and most eco-friendly, smoking experience. Our patent-pending craft cigarette resembles a regular cigarette – but has been improved in every possible way. It has a plastic-free 100% biodegradable filter, totally unbleached cigarette paper, and delicious African tobacco – naturally free from artificial additives. And that’s just the cigarette!

Check out The Solution tab for more info on our product.

All this makes Smokey Treats the first cigarette company to truly accept its responsibility to protect the environment, rather than force the blame onto its customers. We don’t feel blames for you, we just feel flames for you – brah.

We’re currently in the process of launching the market test for our flagship brand, Woodland Craft Cigarettes, on the South African market – our home. It’s taken almost 3 years to get this product to you, and SHO…. it tastes good.

From soil to retail shelf and beyond: This is a conscious company that exercises moral responsibility and implements intelligent solutions. Our business is therefore to create and grow independent premium-quality brands that put the environment first.

Let’s hope you like them 😉

Our Initiatives

We’re Planting Trees

We’re not only trying to clean-up South Africa, but also make it even more beautiful. Smokey Treats is committed to donating 1% of our net profits towards planting trees.

Through this we hope to plant many millions of trees around Africa in the coming years.

Tree-huggers? Absolutely.

We Do It Local

How come? Because it’s lakka.

We support local industry by sourcing our tobacco and manufacturing our cigarettes, exclusively, in Africa.

As a proudly South African company, we believe that it is our responsibility to contribute to the government’s resources that enable it to improve the lives of its people. Therefore, we pay all of our tax. Gladly.

The Founders

Davide Scott

Chief Operations Officer

We founded Smokey Treats when we were 20 years old and studying at UCT. Since day one, our drive to bring this product to market has stemmed from our passion for nature, and our love for smoking. We look forward to changing the world.

Adam van Wyngaarden

Chief Executive Officer

We aim to provide smokers with something we’ve always hoped to have: An opportunity to smoke more responsibly. But, without the hassle of having to roll our own ciggies with biodegradable filters or carry around used butts in our pockets.

Although we’re in the business of selling cigarettes, we do not advocate the smoking of any tobacco product and encourage smokers to moderate – or better, stop – their consumption. This product can still kill you, no matter how natural.

Our Story

The Idea

One day, while smoking, we realised that our university campus looked more like an ashtray than an institution of learning.

Like many outdoor public places, ciggie butts littered – almost – every square meter of the place. At first it didn’t seem to be too much more than an eye-sore. Although, when Siri told us that they weren’t made out of cork or cotton (as they’re commonly believed to be) but rather a non-biodegradable plastic, we decided to do something about it.

We sought to clean-up our campus by selling rollies with biodegradable wood-pulp filters.

As we learnt more about the artificial additives and chemical processes involved in making cigarettes,  the enormous room for improvement began to seem obvious. So we be began developing something a whole lot better.

But, what started-out as some high-idea shared between two varsity mates turned into 2 and a half years of unbelievable hustle to make our into dream a global game-changer.

Vortex Rollies

We decided to test our idea at December Vortex, the filthiest festival this side of 1969’s Woodstock. For four days and four nights we sat in my parent’s garden shed rolling, packaging, and smoking our original Smokey Treats rollies. It was nine rollies per pack – all biodegradable. And just look at them, aren’t they lakka? We’ve kept some elements from the design (like the acacia tree) to remind us where we came from and what we’re trying to achieve.

Come party time, our rollies were a huge hit among the festival-goers! As news spread, queues grew from our campsite. With Davi and I honestly too inebriated to try sell, it was then that we realized that our product really sells itself. Why? They’re just better. By the end of our second day there – we had sold-out.

Prototype Product

We saw our success at Vortex as a proof of concept. But, we thought the only way to offer a realistic alternative to regular cigarettes was to produce cigarettes ourselves. So we spent more than a year sourcing the best, and most environmentally-friendly, materials from around the world. To skip a couple of steps, including personally trying to engineer a cigarette-making machine, we finally found a manufacturer that accepted our desire to remain independent and was willing to run our unusual [risky] materials on their machines.

At last, our first Smokey Treats cigarette prototype was born.

The Challenges

Since then we’ve dedicated thousands of hours towards further refining our product, and getting it you – the discerning 21st century consumer.

But this has been no easier than trying to light a ciggy in a shidsdorm – with a wet match! We’ve faced many a challenge along the way.

The most obvious challenge was that we knew little about the practicalities of business and virtually nothing about the cigarette industry to start-off with. We just wanted a good smoke.

Funding difficulties, legislative constraints, and logistic nightmares all made life difficult. The naysayers made us question our commitment to our venture: Some people said that it was crazy and just could not be done.

But it was our competition that really made us question our sanity  [nervous laughter]. We learnt first-hand that competition in the cigarette industry is notorious for being amongst the fiercest – and downright dirtiest – in the world… flippin’ hectic.

So our company’s survival is completely dependent on you. If you, like us, believe that smoking should be FOR YOUR PLEASURE & THE PLANET:

Make the difference.
